Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, also known as ‘Thăng Long’ or ‘Rising Dragon’ because an ancient ruler believed to have seen a dragon rising amidst the city’s Red River, is renowned for its many legends. This once historically famous holiday home for royalties, still retains the old French and Chinese architecture.

The Temple of Literature is one of Hanoi’s oldest architectural sites.  Built in 1070, the Temple of Literature is Vietnam’s very first national university and followed the teachings of Confucius. Once training the crème of Vietnam, it functioned as the imperial academy for many crown princes.  Withstanding many wars and disasters, the temple still retains its timeless beauty.

In the year 1484, King Le Thanh Tong wanted the names of all 2,313 individuals who achieved a doctorate to be scribed on the stone stelae structures, carried on the backs of enormous tortoises. The tortoise is one of Vietnam’s four holy animals, and thus this was considered a great honour. Unfortunately, records on those who obtained a doctoral ranking were only maintained from 1442 to 1779, and out of more than 110 stelae, only 82 stand in the temple today. With five courtyards, numerous gates, impressive statues and a massive stone wall that covers all 54,000 square metres, the Temple of Literature is certainly awe inspiring.

The water puppet theatre, one-pillar pagoda, lake front parks and many museums, all speak of a bygone era that once reigned in this olden city. Hanoi also has its share of night markets and shopping centers. Dong Xuan, Cho Hom and Hang Da are some day time markets that sell unique Vietnamese items and fabrics apart from the usual.
