What began with 5600 litres of fresh milk gathered from the Kotagala Chilling Centre which eventually produced between 100 to 150 lbs of milk powder per day, the Ambewela Milk Factory has certainly come a long way into becoming one of the chief contributors of spray dried milk powder in Sri Lanka. For those wanting to pay a visit, residing at some of the Nuwara Eliya bungalows would be a good start. Jetwing Warwick Gardens known for its Nuwara Eliya accommodation experiences would be worth considering.

Opened on the 17th of January 1974 by the late Hon. Hector Kobbekaduwa Esq. who was the Minister of Agriculture and Land, Ambewela Milk Factory sustains the livelihoods of numerous dairy farmers in the country. The factory receives its milk from 32 collecting centres in Welimada, Bandarawela, Haputhale, Bibile, Passara and neighbouring areas. Pay a visit to the factory and witness the daily functions of the place which have resulted in 33,000 kg of butter being produced. Currently milk collection has reached an amazing 100 million litres per annum and it is projected that these figures would double during the course of the next ten years.
