While it is Sri Lanka’s South Coast that has attracted hordes of sun seekers over the decades, you would be wrong to think that this is the only region for some beach hopping adventures. The island’s West Coast is quickly rivalling its South counterpart and for good reason; ideally located within easy reach of the country’s main international airport, the Western shoreline also has some spectacular beaches, fun water sports and a laidback vibe where one can enjoy plenty of fun in the sun, sand and surf.

The most popular beachside getaway here is undoubtedly the seaside town of Negombo. Once a quaint fishing town, today it is the main hub of the West Coast with Sri Lanka beach hotels and resorts lining its shoreline offering the very best the region has to offer. Apart from spending lazy days in the sand you can also look forward to some exciting water sports such as snorkelling and kite surfing, while those interested in diving can explore the waters surrounding the coast as well. After a day at the beach you can also try some of the town’s restaurants or visit the many historic colonial churches and attractions such as the Dutch Canal.

If you are in search of a more secluded beach holiday then there are charming escapes in the West Coast worth visiting as well. Marawila is one such site worth visiting and which has a sun drenched stretch of shore where you can enjoy some peace and quiet. Amagi Beach Marawila is an ideal choice of accommodation here right by the beach. Make sure you also look to do some exploring and visit sites such as the Kurusa Church and even take a ride on the Marawila Lagoon.

Staying in the West Coast, Chilaw is another idyllic getaway where you can enjoy some beachside getaways. Spend your days working on that perfect holiday tan and make sure to also soak up some local culture with visits to the local Munneswaram Temple which hosts colourful Hindu festivals well worth witnessing.
