The expansive body of water, which is known as Bolgoda Lake, covers a land area of three hundred and forty seven square kilometres. However, it only reaches fifty feet at its deepest point. During the British colonial era it was used by British Officers residing in Colombo for hunting and recreational purposes.

The lake is ideal for an afternoon of boating because it is conveniently situated on the outer fringes of Colombo, the capital. If you are passing through Colombo’s suburbs and you spot more than one hotel, Mount Lavinia is probably where you are. Keep travelling south for a further half an hour to reach Bolgoda Lake. It consists of two distinct bodies of water: North Lake, which is the larger area and South Lake, the smaller body. Much of North Lake falls within the confines of the Colombo District, while South Lake can be found in the Kalutara District. Kalutara is an up and coming resort town, which is a popular destination for daytrips and weekend getaways. Boating trips and other water sports are popular with holidaymakers who visit this destination. South Lake and North Lake are connected by the Bolgoda Ganga River. Bolgoda Lake also joins the Weras Ganga Basin, which is located in the vicinity of Berjaya Hotel Colombo, which overlooks the popular Mount Lavinia Beach.

Take a boat out on Bolgoda Lake and discover all its natural wonders. The lush mangrove forests are one of its key features. The lake is rich in biodiversity and is a treat for nature lovers and bird watchers alike. Paddle boats and row boats can be rented from outdoor adventure tour companies, which offer fun activities for kids. The lake has several tiny islands that were once used by ferrymen but now make charming picnic spots.
