If you like castles and happen to be fascinated with anything and everything to do with them, then Bran’s Castle in Romania will surely be of interest to you. Commonly known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’, Bran’s castle is an iconic landmark in Romania, and is situated at the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. Despite the dark and sinister connotations, Bran Castle has little to do with vampires or even Vlad Dracul, upon whom the legend is based on. The castle of Vlad Dracul lies in ruins, and the author of Dracula based his lair on Castle Bran purely on the descriptions of the famed castle that he happened upon by chance.

Whether you’re looking to visit Romania by yourself, with loved ones, or through a tour operator in India, Bran’s Castle is an unmissable location and is almost guaranteed to be present in holiday package, especially from entities such as Freedom Holidays.

The castle was established by an Order known as the Teutonic Knights, who emerged out of Palestine during the late twelfth century. They received an area of land so they may help defend the South Eastern border of Transylvania from Cumans and Penchenegs.

Eventually, in the 1920s, the castle became a royal residence, most notably the dwelling place of Queen Marie. The Queen had the castle restored and converted into a luxurious summer palace through the skills of the renowned architect Karen Liman. After the Queen’s passing, the castle was handed down to her daughter, Princess Ileana who ran a hospital within the castle during the Second World War.

Fast forward to today, the castle is a museum that is open to the public where one can journey into the castle and examine the wonders contained within, either individually or through a guided tour.
