Dubbed the Museum of Death for its obviously morbid exhibits the fascinating museum is a must-see highlight for visitors with the strength to stomach the venue’s cringe inspiring showcases. Located within the confines of Siriraj Hospital the locale is actually several museums in one that is open to the public. The Siriraj Medical Museum is divided in to six departments, namely, Pathology, Anatomy, Congenital Disorders, Forensic Pathology, Thai Traditional Medicine and Toxicology. These areas contain permanent exhibits while a space for temporary showcases is also found in the museum which also documents the modern history of the Thai medical sphere. Back in 2008 the temporary exhibit area famously housed a tribute to Siriraj Hospital’s invaluable service during the tsunami of 2004.
One of the chief highlight at the museum includes the mummified corpse of the country’s first serial killer. Named Si Ouey Sae Urng, the mass murderer was known to have killed mostly children during the 1950’s period. A known cannibal the criminal consumed the flesh of his victims once murdered. Caught by police and executed at long last the remains of Si Ouey Sae Urng are on show at the museum to serve as a potent warning for others. Skeletal remains as well as body parts of his victims are also found in glass cases in the area along with two other infamous murderers.
Remains of deceased infants preserved in formaldehyde are also found at the venue to showcases the various ailments from which they died. Hundreds of snakes are also encased in addition to remains of murder victims that were brutally killed. The museum also houses a cosy snack bar named the Mug Cafe where guests can unwind and enjoy a cup of coffee after the emotionally charged tour.
