Sigiriya is located in the Matale District, which belongs to Sri Lanka’s Central Province. It is also part of the Cultural Triangle; a cluster of historic places in the center of the country that have been named World Heritage Sites. The area draws many visitors and Hotel Sigiriya is a great place to stop overnight. You can enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan meal with the famous rocky outcrop rising into the sky in the backdrop. Sigiriya Rock is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks and climbing to its peak should be at the top of your list of things to do in Sigiriya, if you are planning a visit.

The magic of Sigiriya Rock lies in the story behind it. King Kassapa fled to Sigiriya after murdering his father and built his ‘palace in the sky’ on this rock in the fifth century. He converted the giant boulder into a fortress that resembled a majestic lion. The entrance to the palace was through the mouth of the lion, which was flanked by the animal’s front paws. These large paws made of stone, still remain to be seen at a midway point. Much of the magnificent fortress was destroyed after a battle between King Kassapa and his brother, who came to avenge the murder of their father.

While climbing the rock, do not miss the mirror wall inscribed with poems and songs from ancient times. Another section features intricate art that takes the form of frescoes. Once you reach the summit you will have three hundred and sixty degree views of the lush foliage on all sides. Beautifully landscaped gardens surround the base of the rock, complete with ponds and dancing fountains. A recent addition to the attraction is the Sigiriya Museum. It is designed to replicate the rock itself and give visitors an insight into the reign of King Kassapa.
