Getting to Know – Kiwi Birdlife Park

In the heart of Queenstown New Zealand, Kiwi Birdlife Park is a sanctuary devoted to displaying 30 species of the country’s remarkable wildlife in a five acre area that has been beautifully landscaped with 10,000 native plants. A combination of conservation, education and entertainment keep visitors coming.

Visitors have the advantage of viewing the country’s wildlife, mainly the feathered variety, displayed all in one place which is a magnificent achievement. New Zealand birds and animals displayed at the park includes the reclusive kiwi, rare and endangered black stilt that is a wader and a range of other water birds, the kea a parakeet with a really sharp beak, the New Zealand falcon, the large New Zealand pigeon, morepork that is an owl, the green parakeet with a really heavy beak that sets it apart from the red and yellow crowned parakeets and the aptly named rainbow lorikeet among others. However it is the brown kiwi that is the star attraction as in the wild they can be seen only under special conditions. The park also has a collection of geckos, bush tailed possums and the sensational tuatara, one of the last surviving dinosaurs.

The park’s main attractions include guaranteed viewing of Kiwis in specially constructed housing that simulate night-time conditions, audio tours, conservation shows held in a specially constructed netted auditorium where visitors get to meet the country’s premier bird life in innovative ways that keeps the audience fully entertained as well as learning, tuatara encounters and Kiwi feedings.

Visitors can also take a walk along many pleasant trails and relax listening to a range of bird calls, visit the onsite early Maori hunting village to have an encounter with the lives of an ancient people, tuck into goodies at the Kiwi Café or spend time in the souvenir shop. Visitors also have the option of spending a few hours or the whole day at the park enjoying its surroundings and learning about its amazing collection of animals by attending conservation shows and talks. Self guided audio tours allow a 45 minute tour of the park and provides excellent insights into the lives of its inhabitants.
