Regarded as the most historically and culturally significant grave in China, the ancient Huangdi Mausoleum is a key point of interest for all those visiting this part of China. Known for being the initiator of Chinese civilization, Huangdi grew up in Xuanyuan hill. This great tribal leader of ancient China’s final primitive society was responsible for establishing the Hua Xia nationality by unifying the other tribes after defeating the Chiyou tribe.
The tomb of this brave leader, Huangdi Mausoleum sprawls across nearly four square kilometres and is surrounded by lush greenery. A ceremony pavilion stands in front of the mausoleum. Rising to a height of four metres, the mausoleum also has a high board in front with the writing “Han Wu Xian Tai”. The charming Xuanyuan Temple housing a number of historical relics is also located at this site. An ancient cypress tree said to have been planted by Huangdi himself can be seen on entering the temple. A stele pavilion with 47 steles and a hallway are to the north of the temple’s gate. Main structures within the temple include ‘Renwen Chuzu’ hall, Stele Pavilion and the temple gate.
Throughout China’s history memorial ceremonies for Huangdi were held by many emperors. At ‘Hanwu Xiantai’, a platform near his tomb, similar types of ceremonies were held by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. A quite remarkable structure in this is the Longyu Pavilion with distinctive architecture. Those visiting this 5 stories tall structure can take in views of Huangling County and Mt. Qiao from the top. West and east hillsides have an abundance of interesting sights including clear waters, forests and mazes.
