Established in 1962 this gorgeous sanctuary consists of stunning environs where a variety of exotic animals roam free. Located within the Nakhon Ratchasima province the park spills over to the regions of Nakhon Nayok, Saraburi and Prachinburi. Best of all it is just 3 hours from Bangkok City hotels.

Impressive Scale and Magnificent Environs

The national park covers an area extent of 2168sqkms. This area includes beautiful rain forests and rolling grasslands. The parks average altitude is around 400 to 1000 metres while the Khao Rom Peak measuring a height of 1,351 metres is the highest in the sanctuary. The park is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Reserve.

Exotic Wildlife – Promises to Thrill

Khao Yai is home to varied species of animals; keep a look out for mammals such as elephants, barking deer, bear, otters, gibbons, macaques and gaurs. Strangely the place has only one residential crocodile which can be stumbled upon on a trek along its familiar paths. During March and April you can easily spot a number of reptile species in the wilderness; these include reticulated python, Chinese water dragon, Chinese ratsnake, ahateulla prasina, beautiful crested lizards and water monitors. If you are a keen fan of reptilians remember that the colder months make it hard to spot the animals.

Bird Watchers Paradise

The park is quite a treat for birdwatchers as it entertains over 300 local and migratory bird varieties. Thailand’s largest convergence of Hornbills are found here while scarlet minivets, mountain scoop owls, Asian fairy bluebirds, drongos, magpies, collared owls and loads more are yours to observe. Along the trails and roads you will spot the ground dwellers; green legged partridges, jungle fowls, pheasants and Siamese fireback’s. The dry months and migratory periods between March and April are best for bird watching in the reserve. Do plan a visit to the verdant confines just 3 hours from the city home to the AVANI Atrium Bangkok where loads of relaxation awaits.
