Just five kilometers away from the Mackay City Centre is the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens consisting of five “culturally-themed” gardens signifying the cultural heritage of Mackay. It showcases splendorous native Australian plants as well numerous varieties of tropical flora. If you are a nature lover and long to spend some time in this garden of life and colour you’ll be pleased to find accommodation within easy walking distance from the Botanic Gardens at Oaks Rivermarque of Mackay hotels.

The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens was made possible by a Seeding Grant from the Queensland State Government and was open to the public in May 2003. At present it is funded and operated by the Mackay Regional Council. Located in Lagoon Street, Mackay, this Botanic Garden not only offers a fine display of plants and foliage but has turned out to be a home for birds and insects giving its visitors an excellent opportunity for “birds watching” and “insect spotting”.

The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens is the ideal place to treat yourself with some peace and solitude. The breathtaking view and it’s recreational facility featuring over three kilometers of walking and cycling trails, wetland boardwalks, a cafe, restaurant, gallery facing the lagoon and children’s park makes it the ideal place to relax for the whole family. It has many educational and entertaining programs conducted for kids and also easy access for disabled persons. Dogs are welcomed with their owners and must be on a leash at all times and owners are encouraged to use the free “Doggy-doo” bags that are placed at main entrances to the gardens. The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens also offers a range of spaces and areas for community events, meetings and conferences as well as weddings, celebrations and social gatherings. The Botanic Gardens is opened daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Street Parking is available to visitors. No alcohol is permitted in the Botanic Gardens.
