Male is the capital city of the nation of Maldives. It is a complete island in itself and is the commercial hub of Maldives. Despite being the busiest and most populated city in the Maldives, it only occupies a total of just 1.7 square kilometers and can easily be circumvented by bicycle in just 45 minutes. Before heading here look to find suitable accommodation such as at the Maldives villas at Kandolhu Island that blend traditional style with modern luxury.

Just like every other island in Maldives, Male is beautiful. It boasts stretches of exquisite white sands and seas with shallow water that sparkle amidst the blazing tropical sun. It is a well preserved island this Male and in addition to its picturesque charms it boasts an array of cultural and religious attraction that are certainly worth exploring.

In the past Male was known as the Sultan Island as it has always been the ruling city where the government seat was housed. The history and culture of this nation is etched in this city and can be explored in locations like the Sultan Park and the national museum of the Maldives. The Islamic Center is the most beautifully architected structure in the Maldives. Located just on the south of Jumhoori Maidan this complex houses the largest mosque in the nation and is capable of accommodating around 5000 worshippers. The structure is symbolized by its large golden domes. The center point of Male is called the Republic Square and is marked by a tall flagpole with a massive Maldivian Flag. It primarily comes to life during political demonstrations. For a historic place of worship visit the Friday mosque. Built in 1656 this mosque exhibits an array of fine Arabic art and calligraphy. If you do not have too much time to explore the many islands of Maldives at least visit the Hulhumale Island. Just a quick boat ride away from the capital, this island does boast most of the charms of a typical Maldivian island. It is however artificial in nature and is somewhat like a countryside for the Maldives.
