December is an exhilarating month in Macau. The whole 29.9 sq km of the city takes on a festive air and throngs of partygoers from around the world descend on it, adding considerably to its small population, expecting to have the best New Years’ Eve of their lives. All the hotels are packed to capacity with guests who have booked their accommodation well in advance.

While almost all casinos host extravagant parties and acts headlined by international entertainers, there is also plenty of free entertainment. Macau’s Municipal Affairs Bureau hosts a fireworks display and countdown concert with top Asian performers along the waterfront at Praca do Lago Sai Van in front of the Macau Tower, a countdown party at Carmo Zone in Taipa Island and other events at Rotunda de Carlos Maia that are hugely popular. When the fireworks do go off after days of festivity, people gravitate towards the Avenida da Praia Grande and outside the Lisboa to get the best views.

However, it is what goes on in the many fabulous casinos and hotels that are of the greatest interest. As can be imagined, practically all the hotels and restaurants have been booked in advance by excited visitors who have planned to have many fun days. The Cotai Strip Development with its high-end hotels and casinos generally throw a big bash featuring celebrity filled concerts at the Cotai Arena that are sold out well in advance, along with an incredible pyrotechnic show to ring in the New Year. Illuminations including the use of 3D video mapping technology to light up façades of buildings not only attract huge crowds but add to the excitement in the air.

The countdown concert and fireworks display on the Cotai Strip is the culmination of a series of events held throughout December. Many revelers also frequent restaurants and clubs around the city and in the outlying islands. Dinner and dancing usually starting with champagne and extravagant menus featuring exotic Asian and international cuisines is the norm. Little touches that add to the seasonal cheer at some parties include bagpipers playing during the countdown, international acrobatic shows, live performances by popular singers and dancers, DJs spinning hot tracks and offers of overnight breakfast followed by champagne brunches.
