The Pidurangala rock and cave temple complex is located a ways north of Sigiriya, and is a site of great archeological interest as well as of religious value to Buddhists. A rock similar in size to her famous sister of Sigiriya, Pidurangala is considered to be the site where Kasyapa relocated the Buddhist monks living in Sigiriya when he began construction of his palace atop Sigiriya. The creation of the Pidurangala Raja Maha Viharaya, also known as the Pidurangala monastery, although generally attributed to the above mentioned exodus of monks, is claimed by some to date back to the 2nd century BC.

Although not as large as the Dambulla cave temple, the main temple is a must-see with its decorated entrance and Buddha statues. Situated higher up, near the summit of the rock, is a reclining Buddha statue made of brick and covered in plaster, and it is an intricate piece of religious art. The devotion and sheer skill of the sculptor can be seen in the intricate brick work visible in areas where the plaster has peeled away. There are also rock inscriptions on Pidurangala and it is thought that the complex served as a residential pirivena (which is an institution of learning specializing in religious studies).

As a tourist site today, it is a much-less frequented spot when compared to Sigiriya and is a haven for travelers seeking a serene trek within the verdant tropical jungle and monastery ruins. Upon the reaching of the summit, you will witness the entire North Eastern province of Sri Lanka spread out across a 360-degree panorama view that is said to be matchless in beauty and splendor.
