Ubud is an interesting region with a great culture and a vibrant heritage. With the bonus of being a city of an island which is recognized the world over for its exotic landscapes and geographical features Ubud has also grown recently to become of the major tourist destinations in the world. Ubud marks the starting point of the contemporary Balinese Art Movement and this marked a revolutionary turning point in the art traditions of the island.

Artists all over began to dispose of various traditional and conventional thought processes which lead to the painting of various religious and court frames, in favour of more modern themes that depicted daily lifestyles of the people and its related incidents. The Puri Lukisan Museum is a stronghold that showcases brilliant works of art from talented artists who have been trained at the hands of the various schools of art in Bali. Each and every piece if marked with a label coherently in English. The museum is said to have been established through the collective efforts of Rudolf Bonnet, Walter Spies and Cokorda Gede Agung Sukawati who is a prince of the royal bloodline of Ubud. Quite a few Ubud resorts such as the Alila Ubud among many others cater to the accommodation needs of the vast crowds that gather in the Ubud region to marvel at the amazing museum and many other attractions in the area.

The east wing of the museum holds a vast congregation of art that date back from the earlier times from regions in and out of Ubud. Cloth Wayang is one such style of art which features the “shadow puppetry technique”. The north wing of the building displays drawings done in ink from the creative geniuses Gusti Nyoman Lempad and Pita Maha. The museum also houses a great bookshop which features many good reads and a café for those who wish to relax a bit amid beautifully landscaped tropical gardens.
