The Purple Bamboo Garden is named as such for a reason; it is a celebration of the bamboo plant in the most artistic style. Everywhere you turn several varieties of Bamboo greets you, alive, on floor art, benches and bridges. China has a long standing affair with Bamboo and beauty both of which are beautifully portrayed in the Zizhuyuan Park; the Purple Bamboo Garden.

The Garden has a deep rooted history that dates back to the Ming Dynasty. At the time, the land was sacred and the statue of Avalokitheshvara was erected and worshipped here. Over time, although the spiritual component drifted away the sheer beauty of the location could never be overseen, so much so that in 1949, the area was renovated and redesigned and open to public as the Purple Bamboo Garden. Throughout the nearly 500,000 square feet of area in the garden several features glorify this picturesque haven making it a natural work of art. Three lakes and two small islands are found here making the garden a little world in itself. Hundreds of lotus flowers spread open there magnificent petals giving you a breathtaking sea of pink and white. There is absolutely no feeling comparable to boating in this blossoming bliss, something you can experience during the summer months. The park is a myriad of scenic spots that is created by bridges, corridors and pavilions. It is also the home of the famous Yunshi garden designed in a one of a kind South River style. At the western side of the garden, you will be greeted by a cockloft and a fishing hole adorned with an array of purple bamboos. Bamboo is the highlight of the garden, more than 50 varieties of Bamboo make their home here making one truly appreciate bamboo as an ornament in breathtaking scenery.
