There are a number of theories as to how the Ancient Olympic Games, historically recorded to have taken place in Greece, derived its name. Some historians assert that it was called as such because the games took place in Olympia while legend dictates that Heracles, son of Zeus, named it such. The latter assertion is of no surprise considering the great emphasis the Greeks placed on mythology.

In modern times, the games still garner as much interest and speculation as the ancient games did and such events have even inspired modern literary works. Intriguingly, the Ancient Olympic Games were initiated in 776 B.C and the interest in them gradually declined until 1859 when the first modern games took place. Since then, they have been held every four years in various cities. In preparation for this great event, many countries have constructed Olympic standard parks, stadiums and centres to host the event in all its glory.

For instance, the Utah Olympic Park was built for the 2002 Winter Olympics and is equipped with all the modern facilities and amenities necessary for winter sports. The Sydney Olympic Park in New South Wales is yet another site built for the 2000 games. The most recent games in 2012 witnessed the British capital of London preparing for the event with fervour and left the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in its wake. This complex was constructed for the Summer Olympics of 2012 as well as the Summer Paralympics in the same year and is located in East London.

The park, formally known as the Olympic Park, was renamed as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of the reigning Queen Elizabeth ll and is an iconic place to visit while staying at 4 star UK hotels in London for it allows you a small glimpse into history.
