The Muttrah Corniche extends for nearly three kilometres alongside the Muttrah Harbour and is located in Muttrah, which is considered to be the historical and cultural centre of Muscat, Oman. This stretch of land is lined with bubbling fountains and lush gardens. The area acts like a time capsule, transporting visitors into a charming point in Oman’s history. From the corniche one is treated to stunning vistas of the town and the ocean. During the day one can spot dozens of fishing boats going about their business. However, the best time to visit the corniche is at night. As the sun goes down, the town lights up and is beautifully reflected in the dark waters.

At the north end of the corniche one can find a fish market. This is where the dhows (a type of seagoing vessel used by the locals) anchor. Here one can get fresh fish at amazingly low prices. There is also a vegetable and fruit market adjacent to the fish market. A souk (open air market) runs alongside the corniche, and one can obtain a variety of goods here, from perfumes and incense to carpets and antiques. The best time to visit the market is during the evening. When visiting Muttrah tourists should also try and stop by the Muttrah Harbour. From dawn till about 10 am the harbour is a whirlpool of activity and it is quite interesting to watch the arrivals and departures of the different ships.

Another important place of note is the Muttrah Fort. Dating to the sixteenth century, the fort was built by the Portuguese and overlooks the entire city. Visitors can climb to the top of the forts watchtower to get amazing panoramic views of the surrounding area. One can also visit the Al Lawatiya Mosque. Although the mosque is open only to Muslims one can appreciate the buildings architecture from afar. Featuring a minaret and dome flecked with gold, the mosque is a fine example of Arabic architecture.

When it comes to accommodation in Oman one is presented with a number of choices. Those looking for an Oman beach resort should try the Millennium Resort Mussanah. The Oman Muscat hotel has a central location and is suitable for business and leisure travellers.
