Founded in 1987, the Vietnamese Women’s Museum is one that digs deep in to the culture, society, role and history of Vietnamese women. Rather than focusing on Vietnamese women in general the museum explores the diversity as well as the commonality between women of all 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam.

The Hanoi museum has more than 25,000 objects that give visitors a better understanding of the Vietnamese women. Also taking on the role of fostering equality, development and peace, it functions as a centre of cultural exchange and global fostering where women of other nationalities are welcomed.

The permanent exhibits are Women in History, Women in Family and women’s fashion. These include a diverse range of objects such as jewels, craft, textiles, French as well as American War memorabilia and 21 films that bring to life the women of Vietnam. Care has been given to include exhibits that also portray the lives of women belonging to various ethnic minorities.

Special Exhibits are Memory of Time, Street vendors and Vietnamese Women in Films. Memory of Time captures the important role that women played for the liberation of Vietnam, dedicating their lives for the love of their nation. Though the memorabilia are from a time of violence, what they portray is love, sacrifice and courage.

Street vendours like the name suggests is an exhibition that showcases the stories of sellers of Hanoi streets. With 30 objects, 128 photographs and many documentaries as well as interviews, visitors will understand that women continue to sacrifice and show love, courage, continuing to battle with other modern day wars. Women in Films commemorate the role that women have played in developing Vietnamese movies and also include stories that showcase their contribution to the nation.
