The Indonesia island of Java has much to offer visitors in the way of culture, traditional dance and music and the beautiful lush mountains of central Java. The capital Surakarta, also known as Solo, is the epicentre of Javanese tradition. Although its considered less westernised than its closes neighbor Yogyakarta, the city has plenty to offer tourists in the way of teeming markets, malls, and of course, the grand Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat.

The Keraton Surakarta, or as it’s official known the Kraton Surakarta Sultanate, is a historic royal complex that should not be missed. Construction first began on the complex back in 1744 by Sunan Pakubowono II, the site has since undergone numerous changes, making it a important cultural and historical site. Located along the banks of the Solo River, the palace was officially occupied in 1745, according to history, the royal family made a day long procession to the Keraton Surakarta after the previous complex was abandoned due to severe damage, caused by invaders who ransacked the place in 1742.

Between the years 1893 to 1939, the Keraton Surakarta went through what many believe was its golden age. The complex underwent major renovation that combined the architectural styles of Javanese and European, in shades of varying white and blue. The complex is made up of several halls, public courts and private pavilions that were used solely by the royal family. It was also heavily fortified to protect the family from attacks. The Keraton Surakarta is located near several well-known landmarks in the city, so it isn’t hard to find. Do take the time to pay it a visit and get a closer look at Javanese history.
