Goa is well-known around the world for its laid-back vibes, beautiful beaches and colonial architecture left behind by the Portuguese; and while there are various amazing opportunities for Sightseeing in Goa, the city of Panaji is one of the best locations to experience the real Goa. Whilst most tourists visiting Goa opt to stay near the scenic coastlines where luxurious resorts like the exclusive Alila Diwa Goa for example, are located, a visit to the Goan capital, Panaji, is definitely worth the trip as it’s filled with several important cultural sites that are a must see for anyone interested in the states colonial heritage,
With a large population of Catholics, it’s no surprise the city is filled with beautiful churches, and one of the most famous of them is the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Located a short drive from Panaji, the grand Basilica of Bom Jesus, listed as a UNESCO word Heritage Site, the Basilica houses the tomb and remains of St Francis Xavier. St Francis Xavier’s missionary journeys throughout Asia is the stuff of legends and he spent several years in Goa. His remains are interred in the mausoleum, inside a glass-sided coffin which is open to the public for viewing.
The construction of the basilica started in 1594 and was finished in 1604, creating a richly elaborate Renaissance structure with a beautiful facade that features intricate detailing. The basilica is the only church that does not have plaster on the exterior walls. According to lore, a Portuguese conservationist had the plaster removed in 1050 under the false impression that exposing the limestone beneath would strengthen the building. This however was not the case and many intricate carvings have eroded over time due to monsoons. The interior is simple yet still imposing; there are several paintings depicting scenes of the life of St Francis and the ornate reredos that stretch from the floor to the wooden ceiling stands out with its baroque design which contrasts against the plain layout of the rest of the church.
