It’s April, and you’re in Bangkok. You walk down the street, where everyone seems to be engaged in some sort of water fight. No one’s angry, though – everyone seems to be having a jolly time. Suddenly, someone throws water at you – ah, the horror! Or maybe joy? It’s supposed to be a fun occasion. What should you do? Turn right back around and throw some water back at them! It’s all done in good faith, and it’s all meant to be fun.
Welcome to Songkran, the Thai New Year!
Thailand’s New Year Celebration
During New Year celebrations in Thailand, instead of fireworks, you see buckets of water being thrown around. There’s laughter all around, and people are having a great time. It’s all a bit chaotic, but that’s part of the fun.
Songkran is the Thai New Year, celebrated in April with three days of fun, cultural rituals, and, of course, water! Initially, it was meant as a ritual to cleanse and bring good fortune, but it has since turned into a street party where locals and tourists soak each other with water guns and buckets – some even turn to hoses for good measure.

Location
The wildest Songkran party happens in Bangkok – more specifically, on Khao San Road. With music and crowds, it’s a full-on water war!
Khao San Road is a classic backpacker paradise, so a visit is a must. It’s about 20 minutes from MBK Center, which is a popular Bangkok fashion mall.
What You Need to Pack
If you’re planning on joining in the water play, you’ll need a waterproof phone case, quick-dry clothes, comfy sandals, and a waterproof bag.
Songkran Etiquette
Fun seems to be the theme of Songkran, but don’t do anything a local wouldn’t do.
- Don’t throw water on monks, babies, or the elderly.
- Don’t throw water at people’s faces.
- While you should wear quick-dry, comfortable clothes, avoid swimsuits or anything that might not be culturally appropriate.
