Once upon a time during the reign of King Rama I, Bangkok was originally a walled city with moats and walls surrounding it with several forts at intervals. It is said that there were 14 forts around it out of which today, only two remain. One of the surviving citadels is the Mahakan Fort located quite close by to Grand Millennium Sukhumvit Bangkok a preferred Sukhumvit hotel among those of whom seeking for a comfortable Bangkok hotel to lodge in during their stay. Although not considered as a major tourist attraction, the Mahakan Fort is regarded as an important cultural monument of not only the city but also of the country. It forms the northeast corner of Rattanakosin Island, providing protection to the eastern entry point to the island. Also interesting finds around the Mahakan Fort are the remains of the wall, Wat Saket and Wat Ratchanadda, remnants of the ancient history on which the city has been found.
