It was the physician, naturalist and collector, Sir Hans Sloane who had laid the foundation to this extensive collection of artefacts from all over the world. A collection of over 71,000 objects that he wanted to be preserved were bequeathed to King George II for a payment of £20,000 to his heirs in return and it was on 7 June 1753, the museum was established by an Act of Parliament.
