Dusky clouds swirl in azure blue skies above a lean cylindrical structure that stands astutely along the coast of Thiruvananthapuram, commonly referred to by foreigners as ‘Trivandrum’ or its old name ‘Travancore’. The cityscape is protected by seven mountains while the outskirts are blessed by a beautiful ocean front. In the olden days in order to safeguard and guide the vessels that drew towards the coast, a lighthouse named ‘Vizhinjam’ was erected in the year 1925.

The red and white structure with winding steps and a ladder that leads you to the summit is not one to be tackled by those with vertigo, but otherwise, the view is exquisite and the atmosphere is serene once you ascend. It is an ideal location for some meditation and relaxation and is widely used for this very purpose. The gushing waves and the strong gusts of wind are overwhelming, but the natural bounties delight the sparing crowds who stagger up the twirling staircase.

The grounds on which the lighthouse is located is slightly more elevated from the rest of the area and the lines of coconut trees look minute adjacent to the lighthouse. This bit of land which protrudes towards the ocean is panoramic from above and would have been chosen for this purpose as it is outstandingly visible from afar.

At night a steady and expansive light emanates from the big windows as in the days of yore. Though vessels that pass by do not need to be directed by its light any longer, the ships are accustomed to the added brightness it provides. A solar panel which partly or completely powers the light that burns through the night is in place at the lighthouse. This is a much more recent addition.

Even though it is not one of the most widely visited attractions, if you do happen to be holidaying at a Kerala resort, this is one prominent site that locals will encourage you to visit. Patrons of a 3 Star Hotel in Kerala will be able to truly appreciate the architecture and stature of the lighthouse from their balconies. Travellers in search of an idyllic getaway in which to explore and experience this fascinating region of India can stay at Poovar Island Resort, a captivating property that offers a truly memorable holiday.
