The southern edge of Sri Lanka contains many wonders. Coastal beauty and historical heritage entwine to create a setting like no other. A lesser known locale within the popular Galle district is the coastal town of Koggala. Although it remains obscure to the outside world, many insight guides will recommend that you visit the place, which contains places ranging from resorts and hotels such as We Escape to notable historical sites such as the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum.

Koggala is most famous for being the birthplace of the notable Sri Lankan author Martin Wickramasinghe. As a result, his former home was converted into what is known today as the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, a testament to both his life-long works as well as his passionate fascination with everything related to traditional folklore.

The house itself is surrounded by a lush and diverse garden showcasing all the species of fauna indigenous to the island. Of all the sections featured in the museum, perhaps the most striking is the exhibit showcasing old methods of transportation which contains many carriages. It is interesting because the variety featured are most fascinating, ranging from large ones used for industrial-level transport to sportier looking ones that can feature only two occupants.
The next most popular section would be the mask section, showcasing many traditional Sri Lankan masks showcased in a traditional dance known as ‘Kolam’. This section includes elaborate costumes and puppets in addition to various masks.

In addition to folk-items, there is a notable section that features the works and life of the namesake, including pictures of all the notable people he had met during his lifetime. There are definitely some special appearances that will astonish you.

If you ever find yourself in the coastal province of Galle, be sure to take a trip to this iconic museum.
