Bannerghatta Biological Park was uplifted to national level in 1974. This park has quite a tourist appeal with its biological reserves such as zoo, pet corner, butterfly area, fish reservoir, snake home and a safari garden. Stay in Alila Bangalore, one of the Hotels in Whitefield Bangalore with easy access to the park.

In this 25,000-acre stretch you find ancient temples as well as villages. The temples could be accessed through trekking paths. Uddigebande, Hajjamana Kallu and Mirza Hills are some trekking paths that lead to these small temples. Suvarnamukthi stream that runs across the park is believed to have healing powers as its oriental name suggests.

Interestingly this park is the outcome of one man’s petition to create a biological reserve to protect Bangalore’s wildlife. Y M L Sharma, the man behind the petition, is a forest conservator in Karnataka.

The park’s butterfly enclosure was open ceremoniously in 2006 by a government minister. It entered history as India’s first such enclosure. The enclosure consists of a conservatory and a museum along with audiovisual facilities. The whole enclosure occupies about 7.5 acres offering shelter to more than 20 butterfly species.

This man made park holds reputation as India’s most prominent national park with an exclusive range of flora and fauna. This is one treasure trove for any animal lover and wildlife researcher. The exquisite wildlife in this park include Leopards, Lions, Zebras, Bengal Tigers, Panthers, Porcupines, Rhinoceroses, Elephants, Spotted Deer’s, White Tigers, Bison, Panthers and Bears. Wildlife is categorized as herbivores and carnivores confining each to separate areas. The guests can also request for private safaris by contacting the park’s help desk.

The park, which is open during usual office hours, is closed on Tuesdays. Despite its all time tropical climate, the recommended season to visit the park is from September to January.

In Bangalore, this must top your list of places to visit.
