The Bank of Thailand Museum is a museum dedicated to banking and is situated within the main mansions of the Thevaves Palace and the Bang Khunphrom Palace (which once served as the residence of Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand). The museum charts the evolution of currency in Thailand, from the glass beads, bracelets and seeds used during the earliest days to more familiar types of money such as Sri Vijaya coins and Funan coins. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1993 in a ceremony presided by King Bhumipol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.
There are fourteen rooms in the museum some of them displaying different aspects of the history of currency in Thailand, while others relate the history of the bank itself. The Bank of Thailand Museum is not just for those interested in numismatics but is a fascinating place, sure to engage even those without a particular fascination with the subject. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9.30 am to 4 pm. However, only a limited number of people are allowed in at a particular time, so it is always best to call ahead and make an appointment first. The museum is located along Samsen Road in Bangkok’s Phra Nakorn District. The easiest way to get there is by taxi.
