The Bung Sam Lan Lake is undoubtedly the best freshwater fishing hole in Bangkok, Thailand. Not only are the fish plentiful, but one can also count on seeing different varieties. The lake is one of Bangkok’s best kept secrets, with few people outside of locals knowing about it. Spanning around twenty acres, the large lake is known by several names including Bungsamran and Bungsamlan, and means ‘luxury lake’ in Thai. The title is a reference to the lake’s rich aquatic diversity and the numerous bungalows that line it.

Formerly a swamp, the lake is not very deep, ranging between ten to twenty five feet in depth. Despite being somewhat shallow, it is home to some really big fish. The three biggest variety of fish found here are the arapaima, the giant Siamese carp and the Mekong giant catfish. All three species can grow in excess of one hundred kilograms and are among the largest species of freshwater fish in the world. Both the giant Siamese carp and the Mekong giant catfish are very powerful fish and it can be quite a challenge to land one.

The presence of underwater obstacles poses a further challenge. However, the challenge only makes landing one of these legendary giants all the more rewarding. After posing for a few photos one can release the fish back into the water. The Bung Sam Lan Lake is situated on the outskirts of Bangkok, approximately forty minutes from the city centre. For seasoned anglers and those just starting out, a trip to Bung Sam Lan Lake will definitely be one to remember.
