Safa Park in central Dubai stretches for one kilometer from Al Wasl Road to Shiek Sayed Road. The 64ha open space was created in 1975 to meet a long felt recreational need of the growing urban population in the city. Turning a once neglected area of the city into an urban space for everybody satisfied the need for more and better recreation facilities as well as an area of natural beauty to foster the well being of local communities. Over several years the park underwent upgrades resulting in the introduction of recreational and service facilities including three lakes, a large number of trees and bushes, green lawns covering 80% of the parks exposed area, entertainment and sports facilities and a forested hill that offers views over the adjacent area. A water fall cascading down the hill flows into the largest of the three lakes where a fountain plays throughout the day spreading a cooling breeze.

The park’s popularity with the public is quite clear as it is crowded most days of the week. Cricketers of all ages display their prowess on the lawns during weekends while the jogging track is in use at all times of the day as are the volleyball, tennis and basket ball courts and the soccer pitch. Other popular areas of the park include the maze, the ladies garden, the children’s park and its many tree lined walkways. The barbeque area and picnic spots are the destination of families and groups of friends during weekends while Ferris wheel rides, bumper cars, restaurants and fast food places are popular with all ages. A giant trampoline, outdoor and indoor games keep young park goers suitably engaged. Another interesting facility is the traffic village where school kids are taught traffic rules. The more than 16,000 trees and shrubs in the park and the ponds and lakes attract over 200 species of birds in spring and autumn making it a birding hotspot. In the cooler months of the year a flea market adds to the attractions. For those too lazy to walk in the park or hire tandem bicycles a mini train is available to take them around.
