Spread out over an expansive 157.5 hectares nearly 1500m above sea level lies a natural enclave the likes of which are not be found anywhere else in Bali. Laden within the lush tropical landscapes of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destination the Bali Botanical Garden is a one of a kind natural enclosure devoted to the country’s rich plant heritage. As one of the nation’s leading botanical hubs in terms of recreation, conservation, research and education this idyllic spot on the Bali map offers guests a unique view of the land’s rainforest plants and its endemic wildlife as well.
Home to over 2000 species of plants the Bali Botanical Garden displays stunning plant varieties from Papua, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku and Bali that have been acquired from breeding initiatives, commercial nurseries and other gardens across the Montane regions of Indonesia. Divided into sections the garden’s main highlights include specialized collections of 8 plant genera. These include roses, begonias, aquatic plants, medicinal plants, cactus, ceremonial plants, orchids and ferns.
The garden’s resident Herbarium stocks 10,000 plant specimens representative of ferns, gymnosperm, moses and flowering plant species. The venue’s orchid enclave is equally breathtaking as this area displays Indonesian orchid species from across the country as well as a number of wild orchid varieties. Crowd pleasers include the highly endangered lady’s slipper orchid and the white and red stunner Vanda tricolour orchid. More than 200 species of Begonia are also on show at the gardens which is considered a national authority on the particular flower genera. The fern collection in the botanical garden is also worth exploring as this non-seeding vascular plant variety is a tropical staple. Species of cactus from America, Switzerland, Africa and Indonesia are found in the Cactus enclosure which displays intriguing varieties of the prickly plant to the amazement of visitors.
Ceremonial plants such as Pitra Yadnya, Dewa Yadnya, Manusia Yadnya and Resi Yadnya are also found at the venue in addition to medicinal plant species and aquatic plants that are scenically immersed in 6 stair ponds laden with pots and stones.
