Situated on the outskirts of the city, Hanshan Temple dates back to the Liang Dynasty. The name of the site is believed to have been taken from the name of a monk, Hanshan, who was in charge of the temple during the Tang Dynasty. Translated to mean “Cold Mountain Temple”, the site is around 5 kms from Suzhou’s old city.
The temple was also immortalised in Zhang Ji’s poem, “A Night Mooring near Maple Bridge” written during the Tang Dynasty. In the poem reference is made to the temple’s bells ringing at midnight and since then the ringing of the bells here have been an important feature. It is possible to view an inscription of the poem made on a stone tablet at the site.
Hanshan Temple spans an area of around three acres and the architecture showcases Qing Dynasty style design. As you explore the site you will come across many fascinating features and attractions that are worth spending time observing. Among these sites of interest include the Bell Tower, Hongfa Hall, Fengjiang Pavilion, the Grand Prayer Hall and the Sutra-Collection Building. Also of note here is the Buddhist pagoda which is known as the Puming Pagoda. A symbolic structure of this sacred site, this pagoda towers to a height of about 42 metres.
