The Maldives archipelago, which consists of over a thousand islands, is located in the Laccadive Sea. The islands are renowned for their exceptional beauty, pleasant weather and friendly locals, all of which have contributed to Maldives becoming one of the best loved tourist destinations on the planet. The island does not have many attractions and instead visitors have the opportunity to try out a variety of water sports such as jet skiing, parasailing, kite surfing and kayaking. Some activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling are considered ‘must do’ activities.

Tourists who want to take a day off from the beach and explore the country’s history and culture can take a day excursion to Malé, the country’s capital. While Malé does not have terrific beaches, it is the only place in the country with notable landmarks to visit. These include places like the Mulee Aage (the President’s Palace) and the Hukuru Miskiiy (or Grand Friday Mosque).

The Hukuru Miskiiy, constructed in 1656, is easily the biggest and oldest mosque in the country. Beautifully built with intricate designs, it is a tourist favourite. Although entrance is free, non-Muslims have to obtain prior permission before entering. From the mosque one can head over to the Independence Square (Jumhooree Maidhaan). Considered the heart of the city, there is a flag post here that marks the island’s centre. It is a pleasant spot to just relax.

The Islamic Centre is found adjacent to the Independence Square. Capable of housing up to five thousand visitors at a time, everyone is welcome into this building. Entrance is free but photography within the premises is prohibited. One can top off the excursion by visiting the Sultan Park and National Museum, before heading back to the hotel.

As a top tourist destination one can expect accommodation in Maldives to adhere to very high standards. Tourists looking for good Maldives bungalows can try the Anantara Veli Maldives. The Maldives resort not only has all the best modern amenities, it also has the infrastructure for a variety of water sports as well as a divine spa. Whether one is looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation or a holiday full of action and adventure, this is the ideal place to stay.
