Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, it has been the dream of many generations to breathe smoke and carbon free air, walk on crispy green grass and see the beautiful flowers without a thick dust layer dulling their brilliant colour. Masdar City is one of the first of its kind to make this a reality. A city dedicated to conserving energy, this ‘go green’ city situated in Abu Dhabi is expected to complete construction in 2025 and is expected to house close to 40,000 people and 1500 eco friendly businesses. The city, an investment of $18 billion nurtures a complete different ethos to what we know. Its ulterior motive is the conservation of energy and the use of recyclable energy. This futuristic city is a haven for innovation and hopefully the beginnings of a cleaner, safer, greener world to come.

The city has a 60 megawatt solar power plant and additional solar panels have been placed on rooftops. The wind farms outside the city walls add an additional 20 mega watts to the grid. Hosting the largest hydrogen power plant in the world and using geothermal energy, the city is expected to generate its own energy. Masdar City also has a sophisticated system to recycle 80% of used water while the ‘grey water’ will be used for crop irrigation. Along with using green energy, the city also has a zero waste policy. Industrial waste will be recycled or repurposed while biological waste will be used to create fertilizer. One might think that the exterior walls took down a few hundred trees in a tropical forest and completely goes against the principles of the city, but the wood polished walls are actually of a long lasting hardwood-substitute using plantation coconut that are barren called Palmwood. Due to zero carbon policy, automobiles are not allowed in the city and all transportation is done through public driverless shuttles or walking on the shady streets.

The completion of the first phase of the project has seen a wing of the university, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and students from around the world. There are 6 buildings, one street and a number of small apartments. The economic recession of the past years have caused a few alterations to the initial plan of city including generating its own energy, but the principles remain the same and it retains its initial beauty and purpose.
