The tranquil environs of Sailatalarama Temple are loved by the throngs of pilgrims and curious visitors. Located within the town of Ambalangoda the place is home to a number of dagoba’s and devlaya’s that are dedicated Buddhism, local deities and Hindu Gods.

Popular Pilgrimage Site

The Viharaya which is the local name for temple sits on grassy bell shaped hillock that overlooks ancient spice plantations and lakes. You can enjoy stunning views all the way to the borders of the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. A drive of about 4kms inland from the town of Ambalangoda will take you to the temple.

Large Buddha Statue and Winding Stairs

Through various donations by devotees a large sleeping Buddha statue measuring at 35 metres is located within the temple; it is termed to be one of the largest of this style to be seen in the country. It must be said however that the statue is recently erected and does not hold any historical significance. Getting to the summit of the dome shaped hill the shrine sits on is via a flight of 208 steps. Of course there is a road too that meanders to the top of the hill; but climbing the stairs with the devotees is quite an experience.

Where to Stay

Ambalangoda located along the southern coastal belt has some pretty good beaches and rolling surf to enjoy and from the town a short tuk tuk ride will take you to the temple. There is however a shortage of good beach resorts in the town, which is why of all things to do in Kalutara, day trip to Ambalangoda are popular. Kalutara where the Kalu Ganga meets the sea is a popular tourist oriented town just 59.2kms from Ambalangoda; one hour from AVANI Kalutara Resort it is well placed for exploring nearby attractions such as Sailatararama Vihara.
