There is no better place to admire and enjoy the livelihood of animals than in their own natural habitat. Zoological gardens and preservation foundations render yeoman service to both mankind and the animal kingdom, but it is when creatures are observed in their own homes that one can truly understand the fears, tears and moments of happiness of the animals. Those who stay at Abu Dhabi resorts are granted the opportunity to venture towards deserts, sand dunes and the mountainous regions where gazelles, hyenas, tahrs and wolves roam around in their packs. The day excursion or a night under the stars away from the air conditioned comfort of a hotel such as the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort would bring one closer to nature.
Unfortunately the sand gazelle is another living thing that joins the long and ever expanding list of endangered animals. It is indeed sandy coloured, which provides it instant protection from predators in the dessert, but this camouflage has not been sufficient to preserve the species. The soft creamy shade is bejeweled with large dark or black glistening eyes which peer through innocently. They are long legged and have perky necks while their tails are rather pudgy and almost nonexistent. It is considered a type of antelope and admired for its graceful body and smart antlers. Sand gazelles are seen in flat land and liwas as opposed to its distant relative the Arabian Mountain Gazelle who frequents the rocky terrain.
In spite of being among the larger of the types of antelopes in the area, the sand gazelle is a mere twenty odd kilograms in weight and is a mild creature. Their off springs are usually born during the months of spring and autumn and are protected only for a few days, after which the young also join their movements in packs.
