Apart from taking a taxi, you can reach the aquarium by foot from the Osakako Station (Osaka Metro Chuo Line) or take city bus #88 from Osaka Station.
What’s in Store
One of the world’s largest aquariums, this site is well-known for its innovative features and around 30,000 marine creatures which include jellyfish, sea lions, dolphins, penguins, otters and much more. Interestingly, there are 15 large tanks that each have unique settings that recreate the environment and habitats of different regions in the Pacific Rim. There’s also an interactive exhibit area that engages the senses and where you can see aquatic birds like penguins at relatively close quarters.
As mentioned, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan has different attractions and themed habitats. Don’t miss Aqua Gate with its undersea tunnel which gives you a chance to see marine life swim above and around you. Also of note are Japan Deep with its elephant fish and Japanese giant spider crabs, Monterey Bay home to California sea lions, the Jellyfish area and Antarctica which has different penguin species. The Pacific Ocean section is not to be missed too, where you can see the largest fish species on the planet, whale sharks!
Check the official website regarding feeding times (https://www.kaiyukan.com/language/eng/eattime.html) of certain creatures which will add to your visitor experience; this includes the chance to see penguins, sea lions, capybaras and river otters being fed. Another unique experience would be the “Night Aquarium” feature after 5:00pm when the music changes and there’s moonlight-like lighting creating a magical setting.
