Waltham Watch Factory, a historic site in Boston Massachusetts is part of the iconic company that gave its name to some of the best precision instruments the world has ever seen. Built by the Charles River in the early 1850s, 22 buildings covering 400,000 sq ft of natural light filled spaces was where three men established a facility to build affordable pocket and wrist watches by manufacturing interchangeable moving parts. Starting off as American Horologe Company elsewhere it moved to the new location by the Charles River when re launched as Boston Watch Company. The company experienced financial problems due to high cost of production and caused it to change hands several times until a merger with the Waltham Improvement Company formed the American Watch Company in 1860. Although the civil war years stunted its growth, the company kept going and even presented a watch to President Lincoln after the famous Gettysburg Address. As the American Waltham Watch Company from 1885 onwards the company turned out some of its best products including high quality watches for the Canadian Pacific Railway and the first automatic screw making machinery ever. In 1907 the name changed to Waltham Watch Co and remained that way till they declared bankruptcy in 1949. After several attempts to start manufacturing watches again the consumer watch business was spun off and the company stuck to manufacturing precision instruments for the aircraft industry. Between the early 1850s and 1954 the company’s facilities at Waltham produced thousands of high quality watches, clocks, speedometers, compasses, time fuses and various other precision instruments. Its reputation of manufacturing precision instruments of the highest accuracy was such that the company was called upon to manufacture the mechanical gyroscopes for the Apollo mission in 1962.

Although declared a historic site, the factory building lay unoccupied after its closure in 1957 until a developer bought it in 2007 and renovated the complex to house offices, 168 up market loft apartments and river front restaurants.
