This architectural interests, coupled with the beautiful coastline, busy markets and the newly constructed Expressway has led to a marked increase in Negombo beach resorts in Sri Lanka. Places to visit in Negombo are numerous and some of the major attractions include Dutch Fort near the Negombo Lagoon, the stunning canal network that extends for over one hundred kilometres and the Fish Market. The town is also fondly known by the epithet ‘Little Rome’ given that it is dotted with Catholic places of worship such as St. Mary’s Church. It is the famous Angurukaramulla Temple that provides a pleasant contrast to this colonial architecture.
The Angurukaramulla Temple, also known as Bodhirajarama Maha Viharaya is home to a ‘Budu Ge’ [the enclosed structure within which the Buddha statue resides] which is complete with walls adorned with Jathaka stories and tales of the Buddha’s life. As Buddhist devotees from across the country visit this religious site, a visit to the Angurukaramulla Temple is bound to allow tourists, foreign to Buddhist culture, to witness how locals venerate their faith, and also to take in the architecture of Buddhist temples. Furthermore, located in the vicinity of the Bodhirajarama Maha Viharaya is a famous centre of Buddhist learning, the Abhayasekeraramaya Temple.
