The Wellington Botanical Garden is a 5.21 hectare area of wild land filled with dense podcrap forest, first set aside for the botanical garden in 1844; this was improved and extended to its full size in the 1870s. Hosting many native plants like rimu, totara and matai, the protected native forests show visitors what the area looked like before the city. Some of the trees date back to the 1860s, making them some of the oldest trees in New Zealand.

The landscaped gardens are home to many varieties brought in by the settlers, and bring colour to the gardens in all seasons. Spring sees magnolias and over 25,000 tulips in bloom, and the year continues with camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas of all shades. One of the most exquisite sites is the Lady Norwood Rose Garden with over 110 variations set around a heritage fountain. It also hosts a rose festival in late November. Sheltering a collection of tropical and temperate plants like orchids and begonias from seasonal changes is the Victorian glasshouse named the Begonia House. Water lilies and other aquatic plants reside in its pond as well. The main garden lights up on summer nights providing an ethereal landscape for visitors to enjoy.

Locals love to jog, cycle or walk up and down the winding lanes of the hill which holds the garden. The Treehouse Visitor Centre, Carter Observatory and Wellington Cable Car Museum are also located inside the premises of the gardens. Take a picturesque cable car ride, a short trip on a vehicle or an invigorating walk up the hill to reach these gardens that promise to be a wonderful experience.
