History

Staying true to its name Ang Thong, which means “a golden bowl”, this marine park comprises 42 islands with exquisite flora and fauna. These islands are of different shapes and sizes. The park was first established in 1980 and each island has got its name depending on the natural geographical features. The ‘Three Pillars Island’ and ‘Sleeping Cow Island’ are two classic examples.

Highlights

This is indeed an ideal destination for backpackers in search of spectacular and most unusual scenery in Thailand. It’s wonderful to view how some of the limestone cliffs have formed into beautiful shapes due to centuries of erosion. You will also witness wildlife creatures like langurs, hairy-nosed otters and even sea turtles in the four distinct types of forests in the park.

Where to stay

If on holiday, a good way to explore this wondrous marine park would be to first make a booking at a Samui island beach resort. One such option that you will invariably come across would be Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort which offers tailor-made excursions to indulge in an unforgettable experience at the Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Things to do

Visiting some of the caves in the park is an amazing experience. They are formed out of intriguing rock formations. Moreover, you should do snorkelling on the island because these beaches are blessed with diverse and stunning coral reefs and exotic marine creatures.
