This attraction is located on the historic site where the first Portuguese explorers landed on Macau, and was inaugurated in 1987. Upon inauguration, the museum acquired many other items through donations and acquisitions. It needed to be expanded and in 1990 a new structure was added to the museum complex which architecturally resembles a majestic boat on anchor.
The site is divided into 4 distinct sections, namely the Maritime Ethnology Exhibition, the Maritime History Section, the Maritime Technology Exhibition and the Aquarium Gallery. The Maritime Ethnology Exhibition explores the traditions and techniques adhered to by fishermen in the region, while displaying some the implements and costumes utilized by the fisher folk. The Maritime History Section takes you through the history of the city from the 15th century onwards and showcases models of the city and the nautical instruments used through the ages by way of interactive media.
The Maritime Technology Exhibition displays technology used in modern as well as ancient times for navigation, dredging and transport, while a display of four different sub-aquatic environments can be seen at the Aquatic Gallery.
