Al Bastakiya is an ancient region with much historic importance in the city of Dubai. This district is named following the Bastak County in Iran which is a city where many people migrated to Dubai. It is also considered as one of the oldest places of residing which was chosen by the early settlers. If travellers are visiting Dubai they can really know about the history of Dubai if they pay a visit to this district. This place lies in the midst of narrow pathways and wind towers along the Dubai Creek. You would also find the oldest fort in Dubai which is a structure which still stands strong and popularly known as Al Fahidi Fort. The city of Bastakiya was constructed back in the 1890s. 
At the start there was only a few housing units which was close upon 60 which were split by narrow zigzag lanes. After the discovery of oil the Bastakiya region got populated with a rich community and became a developed area. In the years 1970 a whole part of Bastakiya district was destroyed in the event of putting up a novel office complex for the ruler of emirates at that time.  After a couple of years the region was ordered to be demolished by the municipality of the area. Later a campaign was run by Rayner Otter following a letter to Prince Charles of Britain on preserving the Bastakiya district. When the Prince visited Dubai he made it a point to visit Bastakiya and meet Rayner Otter. 

The prince too is a lover of architecture and historic monuments and suggested that the Bastakiya district should be preserved. Bastakiya district is significant mostly for its architecture where almost all the houses has a wind tower known as the barjeel. The number of barjeels in a house boasts the wealth of that house.
