The Benthara Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the ancient iconic temples situated next to Benthara River. It is aptly named as Galapatha temple as it is connected to a massive rock that leads the pathway to the holy shrine in the shape of an archway with a stone doorway. Tourists staying in a resort Bentota has to offer, such as AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa can visit this attraction by arranging an excursion. The stone doorway also has two upright pillars on each side and another set above and below the gateway. The carvings with motifs on the pillars are stunning. The stone doorway frame was previously installed at Bentota Udakotuwa Vihara at the Kali Devale.

When you pass through the gateway you will come across many archaeological objects and the Galperanaya which is a water filter made of stone is a unique one to admire. It contains high porous qualities that enable it to absorb water filled into it. The oval shape basin with a mouth on top is about 18 inches deep. Here you will also come across two oval shaped stone pillars containing circular rings that are carved to them. There are two arm shaped objects that hold the Galperanaya under them that look like a pedestal. It is amazing how this Galperanaya works where water gets filled into it from the mouth on top and after few minutes the outer surface becomes slowly damp. Afterwards, drops of water begin to trickle down into the small basin based at the bottom. The surprising thing is that there are no incisions created for water to filter down. Venerable Bentota Assaji Thero who is the chief incumbent of the ancient temple knows to explain how the water straining process works to visitors who are curious to know. Overall, the temple can be described as an archaeological wonder and a marvellous place to visit for those interested in ancient findings that use advanced technology in the bygone era that cannot be achieved even today.
