While Sri Lanka is blessed with stunning rainforests, it is also bordered by what are known as the “rainforests of the sea”; coral reefs play a big part in the country’s marine biodiversity which can be witnessed around the waters surrounding the island.

A rich biodiversity

Coral reefs can be found in abundance around the island and can be seen be you staying at a resort in Pasikudah on the east coast or a hotel in Unawatuna on the south coast. There are more than 180 hard coral species to be found here along with diverse marine life.

 

Hotspots

There are quite a few hotspots when it comes to seeing these coral reefs; if staying on the east coast head to Trincomalee or Pasikudah. If on the south coast, areas such as Hikkaduwa, Rumassala and Unawatuna near Cantaloupe LEVELS also provide access to many coral reefs.

 

Types of corals & reefs

You can find both hard and soft coral types in all kinds of shapes and colours in and around the shores of Sri Lanka. When it comes to coral reefs one will be able to see rocky, patchy, fringing and patchy reefs.

 

Marine species

These coral rich areas are where one can see a wide range of marine species from colourful and small reef fish to larger species such as sea turtles and sharks. Depending on the reef, you may find a variety of crabs, lobsters and sea urchins in the vicinity as well.
