Established as far back as 1980 the London Transport Museum is perhaps the only location in the British capital to discover the back-story of some of the world’s most iconic locomotive inventions. From the towering red Double Decker bus to the almost signatory black taxi cab the vehicles that have defined British transportation and indeed its culture over the years are proudly displayed at this venue devoted to the preservation of the city’s proud transport heritage. Located in Covent Garden the LT Museum differs from the London Transport Museum Depot down Acton as the premier museum space dedicated to conserving London’s transport icons and educating the masses on its gradual evolution through the centuries.
Home to an extensive collection of public transportation vehicles the first catalogue of collectible items were gardened for the museum at the turn of the 20th century with the aid of the London General Omnibus Company. The first consignments included public buses that were conserved after retiring from public service. The collections on display were further enhanced by the London Electric Railway which acquired rail vehicles to expand the existing collection to include trains. Chief highlights at the museum are of course its retinue of well-preserved trains, buses and trolleybuses while trains from the 19th and 20th centuries are also showcased alongside other historic materials relating to the marketing of transportation services and its daily operations.
Organizing various educational events throughout the year visitors heading to the LT Museum in 2012 can look forward to the: “Mind the Map: inspiring art, design and cartography” programme which takes centre stage from May to September as well as other events such as the likes of the Art of Maps and Mapping Symposium, Subterranean London feature and film screenings.

Visitors can also stopover at the London Transport Museum Shop where a wide variety of quirky souvenirs such as the likes of posters and models are available for purchase. Some of the more intriguing items on sale this year also included decommissioned Metropolitan Line train luggage racks which were sold to support the museum’s varied initiatives.
