The upcoming year will usher a plethora of incredible festivities in and around the capital city of Colombo, ranging from religious celebrations to celebrations of many other concepts such as food and even…. Kites. This will definitely be a most marvellous time to visit the island nation of Sri Lanka and you’re guaranteed to end up with many treasured moments that will not soon be forgotten.

The first that that should definitely be on your list is the ‘Duruthu Perahera’, a lavish and grand parade involving a procession featuring acrobats, dancers, drummers, elephants and torch-bearers. The streets are sure to get congested with on-lookers and participants so if you’re seeking accommodation, it’s best to look for a place surrounding Colombo such as Club Suites by Blue Water which is located in the nearby Wadduwa. The amount of things to do in Wadduwa are also a nice change from the metropolitan chaos of Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s National Day is also coming up, to commemorate the day Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain 1948. National Day is yet another grand celebration featuring dancers, various parades and even sporting competitions. The National Day celebrations will soon be followed by the ‘Navam Perahera’, one of Colombo’s most notable parades, which feature lavishly decorated Elephants and simultaneously occur at Viharamahadevi Park and the Beira Lake area respectively.

Following these grand and colourful events, a change of peace will follow with the emergence of the ‘Medin Full-Moon Poya Day’, a day that commemorates Lord Buddha’s return to his home where he revealed the path to enlightenment to his family. This day is traditionally celebrated by engaging in meditation and doing good deeds.

Whether you seek colourful and breath-taking traditional events or simple tributes, Sri Lanka holds many wonders in store for you.
