The Kalutara Bodhiya is home to a scared Bodhi Tree that is held in high reverence by the Buddhist of Sri Lanka. No devout Buddhist will pass through the southern district of Kalutara without stopping to offer arms to the temple for receiving blessings; ensuring a safe journey. It is in fact such a tradition that you will see tills along the sidewalks for passing vehicles to stop and make a donation.

The Sacred Bo Tree

The sacred bo tree of Kalutara grows by the banks of the Kalu Ganga one of Sri Lanka’s main rivers which meets the sea a few metres away from the temple. The bo tree is believed to be one of the 32 saplings of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya flourishing within the sacred city of Anuradhapura. The Sri Maha Bodhiya was brought over from India as a sapling by Princess Sangamitta during the country’s conversion to Buddhism.

The Kalutara Viharaya

Located across the road from the sacred tree the modern Kalutara stupa and Chaitya is one of the most visited Buddhist worship sites on the island. Of all things to do in Kalutara visiting this historical site comes highly recommended.

Importance of the Bodhiya

People of the area started taking notice of the shrine once Prince Wickrema Panyan planted the Bo sapling in 1042 AD. In the 16th century once taken over by the Portuguese the bodhiya served as a fort due to its location.

Getting to the Fort

The Bodhiya located at the entrance to the city centre is easily accessed from the vibrant Kalutara beach resorts of the area. Like the AVANI kalutara Resort look for a hotel that sits near the convergence of the Kalu Ganga and Indian Ocean; one of the most scenic spots in Kalutara.
