An eerie yet fascinating site not to be missed, the Fengdu Ghost City located on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, atop the scenic Ming Mountain. Chongqing apartment accommodation is not hard to find when exploring this location as Somerset JieFangBei Chongqing is a comfortable Chongqing serviced apartment conveniently located in the heart of all the must-see spots in the region. Combining the cultures of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, the Ghost City has a rich history of over 2000 years. Over these 2000 years, the Fengdu has been mentioned in great literary works such as Apotheosis of Heroes, Journey to the West and Strange Tales of a Lonely Studio. However, Fengdu earned its name as the ghost city during the Eastern Han Dynasty when two officials came to the Ming Mountain and decided to name it the “Yinwang” meaning the “king of hell.” Later on during the Tang Dynasty, a stupendous temple was erected here depicting life in hell. This formidable and rather curious temple features extremely graphic and detailed demonic images and torture devices in hell depicting that good done in this life will be rewarded while the evil would be punished in the afterlife. The craftsmanship displayed here is absolutely stunning and the intricate details of the various sculptures and paintings bear witness to the absolute genius of artisanship of the ancient Chinese. However, the temple sees a major fluctuation of guests during its annual temple fair every March 3 – 5 which features an astounding array of folk performances.
