Located about 37km to the North of Colombo, the commercial heart of Sri Lanka, Negombo is popular among the visitors due to its close proximity to the Airport. This has led to the springing up of many Negombo Hotels, as tourists prefer to spend a few days here before they proceed to visit the rest of the country, or just before returning home. Being a coastal city, and in close proximity to a lagoon, there is plenty to do in Negombo, fishing in the lagoon being a fun activity among them.

The lagoon is about 3164 hectares and is the lifeline for many fisherfolks in the area. Taking a stroll towards the lagoon, you would see a diverse vegetation as well as local men engaged in different forms of fishing here. A whole experience of lagoon life is built around the area as well, specifically for tourists that strive to provide them with the unique experience of fishing in a lagoon. If you are not into fishing, you could always opt for a simple boat ride in the lagoon, watching the others fish – or trying to. If you are up for the task, though, there are plenty of options available for you to try your hand at something that the locals do for a living, and take off into the sea early morning or late evening.

It is best that you talk with your hotel before striking up a deal with a local boatman you met on your morning walk, though, as some hotels like Amagi Lagoon Resort & Spa Negombo arrange specialized tours for their visitors along the Dutch canal and into the lagoon. It is best to opt for such a deal as opposed to sailing into the sea with a stranger you met only a few hours back. While Sri Lanka is a safe and hospitable country, one can never be too safe when in a foreign land.
